Why take it for granted that your company’s desktops must be populated by the bulky CRT (cathode-ray tube) monitors we’ve all used for so long? The truth is that depending on your needs, a flat-panel LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor may make a lot more sense. Potential benefits include:

  • low total cost of ownership

  • increased employee comfort and efficiency

  • environmental responsibility

  • a more professional office-place image

Let’s take a minute to analyze each.

Low total cost of ownership (tco)

The TCO of a product is the cost of owning it over its entire life cycle. This cost includes purchase price, operating costs, administration, training, and repairs. From a TCO perspective, flat-panel LCD monitors are a standout investment.

  • LCD monitors are very energy efficient. Their power consumption is typically one-fifth of an equivalent-sized CRT. This means lower electricity and cooling costs. For instance, a 17-inch CRT consumes around 130 watts, whereas the comparably sized HP L1520 LCD monitor uses only 26 watts.

  • LCDs also have a drastically smaller footprint than CRTs. A typical 15-inch flat-panel monitor requires one-fifth the space needed for a 17-inch CRT. And this space savings can add up to cost savings -- after all, office space is money.

Now let’s take a closer look at how an LCD can benefit your employees.

Increased comfort and increased efficiency

In an era of increased ergonomic awareness and regulation, worker comfort -- especially when it comes to eyestrain -- is key.

  • Flat-panel LCD light valves display sharp, easily readable characters and enhanced color rendering. In one advance over CRT technology, color filters combine to produce sharp edges for each sub-pixel, creating extremely crisp images and text. Moreover, LCDs also feature significantly higher brightness and contrast ratios than traditional CRTs. This technology improves text legibility at higher resolutions.

  • Flat monitors minimize glare, greatly improving legibility under any kind of lighting.

  • Unlike curved CRT screens, flat-panel monitors offer minimal distortion.

  • The technology behind flat-panel monitors minimizes screen flicker.

  • Compared to CRTs, LCDs emit very little electromagnetic radiation, which drastically cuts down on the transmission of potentially harmful rays.

LCDs are considerably easier on the eyes than traditional CRTs, which means that employees who stare at the screen all day can work longer without feeling fatigued. In other words, less eyestrain means greater worker efficiency and more savings.

Environmental responsibility

HP’s LCD monitors:

  • Are designed for minimal energy consumption

  • Come with environmentally-friendly user documentation and packaging

  • Can be returned for recycling at the end of their life cycles

  • Are made with an ODC (ozone-depleting chemical)-free manufacturing process

Professional image

The slim-line, lightweight look of HP’s LCD monitors makes them ideal for office environments geared toward making a good impression on partners, investors, or customers. Showrooms and points of sale are only two examples of work environments where design may tip the scales from an opportunity lost to a sale made.
