To get your mobile print center up and running you need to do two things:
- Identify the type of printing you normally do which lets you work efficiently.
- Identify and obtain the equipment and software that gives you the flexibility to print anywhere.

Now think more closely about the devices that you work with while you are on the road:
- Do you only use a PDA that you regularly synchronize with a desktop back at the office -- possibly connecting to your company LAN and e-mail wirelessly?
- Do you strictly use a notebook or laptop?
- Do you have both a PDA and a notebook that you would like to print from?
- Or, are you considering replacing your notebook with a robust PDA to reduce the number of devices you carry?

If you have a notebook you use at both your desk and while you are on the road -- but not a PDA -- your mobile print center may include a Bluetooth or IR-enabled notebook and the Deskjet 450 mobile printer. The Deskjet 450 mobile printer is small enough to carry around with you when you travel.

If you want to print from your PDA, your mobile print center would need a Bluetooth-enabled or IR (infrared) PDA with the proper software installed and the Deskjet 450 mobile printer.

Finally, if it will most effectively facilitate your work style, your mobile print center may include a PDA, a notebook computer, and a Deskjet 450 mobile printer.

| Note: You can also print to a Deskjet 450 mobile printer from cell phones, digital cameras, and other Bluetooth or IR devices not mentioned here. Download the Bluetooth wireless printing guide from the related links box for more information on integrating these devices into your mobile print center. |

With your mobile print center requirements in hand, you are ready to put your print center together. Depending on your personal needs, you will combine either a notebook computer or a PDA (or both) with a Deskjet 450 to create your mobile print center.

A notebook computer that is IR or Bluetooth-enabled |
If your notebook computer has IR capabilities, you can print directly to any IR-enabled printer such as the Deskjet 450. However, if your notebook doesn't have IR support, you can use Bluetooth to communicate wirelessly with the printer.
Many new notebooks come with Bluetooth capabilities built-in. If not, you can easily make your notebook Bluetooth-enabled with the addition of a Bluetooth PCMCIA card or a Bluetooth USB adapter. EITHER WILL give your notebook Bluetooth capabilities and allow it to send print jobs to the Deskjet 450. HP recommends the 3Com Wireless Bluetooth card and USB adapter. See the Buy It section for more information on these products.
Note: If your notebook or PDA is not IR or Bluetooth-enabled, you can still use the parallel cable that comes with the Deskjet 450 to print your documents. While you won't be 100% wireless, you will still be 100% mobile. Refer to the Deskjet 450 user guide for more information.

A PDA computer with printing software and IR or Bluetooth support |
Most PDAs are IR-enabled, which means they are ready to communicate with a mobile printer. And if your PDA doesn't have support for IR, it may very well have Bluetooth support built-in. If your PDA isn't Bluetooth-enabled, you can typically use an expansion card or pack to make it enabled quickly and easily.
In addition to IR or Bluetooth support, your PDA must support printing functions. To give your iPAQ Pocket PC printing capabilities you can download the Mobile Printing for Pocket PC software from HP (you'll find the link in the related links box). This software allows you to print e-mail messages, Pocket Word files, RTF and text files, calendar items, contacts, tasks, and images in BMP, JPG, and PNG formats. If you want to print documents created in the desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint you can purchase and install the Westtk ClearVue viewer.

A deskjet 450 mobile printer |
If your notebook or PDA has IR support (and in the case of the PDA the correct software), then all you need to complete your print center is a Deskjet 450 mobile printer. If you plan to use Bluetooth instead of IR to communicate with the printer, you must insert a Bluetooth CompactFlash card into the printer before you can establish a Bluetooth wireless connection. HP recommends the Anycom CF-2001 CompactFlash card.
Tip: You can also extend Bluetooth printing capabilities to your HP Jornada or a PDA running the Palm OS so you can print to the Deskjet 450. Consult the Bluetooth wireless printing guide for more information.
Once you have a set of Bluetooth-enabled devices and a mobile printer, your print center is complete and ready for action. Next in the Do It section, learn how to print documents from both your notebook and your PDA to the Deskjet 450 mobile printer.
