Print on the go

Do it

After you've set up your mobile print center, printing from your notebook or PDA is quick and easy.

Printing from a notebook

When you are ready to print a document from your notebook to your mobile printer, be sure you have your Bluetooth PC card or USB adapter connected to your notebook (if your notebook doesn't have IR support, that is). The first time you print, you'll need to configure your mobile printer.

To begin, find out which port your Bluetooth card is using:

  • Select Start > Programs > 3Com Mobile > Bluetooth Connection Manager to open the Bluetooth Connection manager window.
  • Select Tools > COM Ports... to open the Bluetooth COM Ports dialog box.
  • Make a quick note of the COM number associated with the card.

Next, install the Deskjet 450 printer driver according to the instructions that came with the product. Finally, configure the printer properties to use the COM port associated with your Bluetooth card:

  • Select Start > Settings > Printers.
  • Right-click the Deskjet 450 printer icon and select Properties from the menu.
  • Click the Ports tab.
  • Select the port your Bluetooth card is using.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.

After you set your printer up the first time you are ready to print any time. To print from any application on your notebook:

  1. Open the file you want to print.
  2. Select File > Print from the application's menus.
  3. Click Print.
  4. In the Select Remote Device dialog box choose the Deskjet 450, which is identified by a Bluetooth device name that will take the form dj450 S/N xxxxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxxxx is the printers serial number.
  5. Click Connect.

Printing from a Pocket PC PDA

As mentioned in the Plan It section, your Pocket PC PDA needs to have either IR or Bluetooth support to print to a Deskjet 450 mobile printer. You also need the free HP Mobile Printing for Pocket PC software installed on your PDA to print Pocket Word, RTF and basic image files. If you want to print Microsoft Office documents you'll need to purchase an install the Westtek ClearVue viewer. After you have the proper software installed you are ready to print.

First, if you are using Bluetooth connectivity, you need to turn your Bluetooth radio on:

  • Tap the Bluetooth status indicator at the bottom right of your PDA screen.
  • Select Turn Radio On.

If you are using IR to communicate with the printer simply line your PDA's IR receiver up with the printer's IR receiver and they will automatically communicate.

To print to the mobile printer from the HP Mobile Printing for Pocket PC software simply follow the instructions for printing that came with the free software download.

Note: These instructions apply to iPAQs with built-in support for Bluetooth. The Bluetooth wireless printing guide includes details on how to use the HP Mobile Printing for Pocket PC software to print from Jornada 500 and 700 series PDAs.

What to expect from PDA printing

Printing from a PDA is a somewhat different from printing from a notebook, simply because a PDA is smaller and print functionality isn't built into its operating system. The HP Mobile Printing for Pocket PC application is a stand-alone application that works with information created in Pocket Word, Pocket Explorer, Pocket Outlook, and other documents.

The mobile printing application handles the printing, so you may see a slight reduction in the quality of embedded graphics. In addition, large or complex documents may take a bit longer to print than they would on a notebook simply because a PDA doesn't have the same processing power or RAM as a typical notebook setup. Finally, because all printing is handled on the PDA itself, the entire document you want to print must be saved on your PDA. If you want to use a wireless LAN or WAN connection to access a document from your company's intranet and print it, you will need to download a copy to your PDA first, and then print it. You can delete it after you've printed it to recover any memory space it took up during printing.

Even with these limitations, you will still get usable and professional documents that you can use in a variety of business situations, as described in the Use It section. If you plan to create documents specifically to print from your PDA as leave-behinds or technical information, spend a little time testing your printouts with your PDA and mobile printer to get the optimum document format that both meets your needs and looks just as you expect it to.
