Switch to a handheld

Do it

The number and type of accessories for handheld devices vary far and wide, depending on the model you choose. You can acquire anything from a leather carrying case, to a gold-plated stylus, to a snap-on digital camera. Of course, just like the features in the handheld device you choose, any accessories should go hand-in-hand with your specific needs. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that your needs may change over time. Investing in a handheld that offers you a wide number of expansion and upgrade options will extend the life of the device -- you most likely don't want to buy a new handheld every six months.

Options and accessories

Expansion cards are available for virtually all handhelds; the specific type varies from model to model. Expansion cards allow you to increase the amount of memory available for use, providing much larger storage capabilities. In addition, a number of applications and reference materials are available on expansion cards, including dictionaries, language translators, road atlases, and electronic books.

There are many handheld-specific peripherals for people who travel for business. Travel printers, business card scanners, and portable presentation devices are just a few of the accessories that can be connected directly to a handheld. For those who need to enter a large amount of text by hand, there are mini-sized and full-sized keyboards that plug directly to the handheld device.

Connectivity devices are the fastest growing group of accessories available for handhelds. If your handheld does not already come with built-in connectivity options, you can easily acquire the connection device you need. Normal modems, wireless modems, networking cards, and Bluetooth cards are all available to add-on to your device.

There are a lot of connectivity options for handhelds. If you need connectivity to your local network, Bluetooth cards and access points can fulfill your desires. If you need to access the Internet from wherever you are, there are a number of services you can choose from, including using a normal modem card to connect via a phone jack or using a wireless card to connect from virtually anywhere. Connectivity options and services vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so choose the model that most appropriately meets your needs.

In addition to local network and Internet access, there are various accessories for adding GPS (Global Positioning System) capabilities. These accessories allow your device to function as a GPS receiver that you can use with mapping, location, and guidance features.
