Security implications

Secure your remote mobile connections because the data traveling over the airwaves are more vulnerable to being intercepted. At the same, mobile devices such as laptops and handheld should have authentication features to prevent unauthorised access.

If confidential data is being transported over the airwaves, encryption should be deployed to prevent data from being glimpsed at while in transit. Virtual Private Networking can be deployed over a public network such as the Internet or mobile network to encrypt moving data.

As long as the data is encrypted, it is reasonably safe from normal prying eyes. In fact, 128-bit encryption can only be broken by a few weeks of supercomputing processing.

Protecting confidential data involves securing the connection into the corporate network and locking down access within mobile devices.

Securing remote access with HP

HP notebooks and handhelds have built-in capabilities that support virtual private networking (VPN) into the corporate network. This helps protect corporate resources from outsiders. An authentication procedure via smart card reader or biometric device will be needed to establish a secure connection.

HP provides the necessary tools to facilitate secure remote access. Any authorised user will have their connection terminated. By only allowing authenticated access, HP mobile devices safeguard important corporate information that may travel over the public Internet.

Different security layers

There are many measures available for securing mobile communication.

Firstly, there is hardware embedded tools that prevent data from being pried from mobile devices. These include Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and biometric recognition tools.

Secondly, protect your data by controlling access to mobile devices. Drive lock encrypts disk drive data while a disk sanitiser automatically removes old data from computers that are about to be taken out of active use. A power-on password feature also prevents authorised use of mobile devices.

Thirdly, encryption via a virtual private tunnel (VPN) protects data that is traversing over a public network such as the Internet or mobile telephony network from intruders.
