Thinking about setting up a wireless office network or maybe you want to support increasingly mobile employees. Implementing wireless and mobile technologies is easier, more affordable and safer than you think. HP dispels the myths associated with such adoption. With step-by-step instructions, we will show you how easy it is to set up wireless and mobile solutions.

What if I use an e-mail system other than Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes?

Many of today's e-mail systems come with options for delivering e-mail over a wireless network. Some offer a Web browser interface for you to access your e-mail. Some offer systems similar to the OneBridge Mobile Groupware. Whatever your e-mail implementation, HP can help you find a mobile solution to compliment it.

Can I use a public hotspot to connect to my company network?

Yes. Instead of using a wireless WAN account and card, you can use a wireless LAN card and a public hotspot to access your company network when you are on the go. Learn more in the Use a public hotspot solution guide.

Will I need more than one access point?

If your wireless network supports more than 40 or 50 users; or your offices are spread across multiple floors; or your office layout places some users far away from the access point, you may need more than one access point. If you face any of the above scenarios, review your wireless LAN planning and site assessment guide before you begin constructing your wireless network. Additionally, consider purchasing the HP Wireless LAN Site Assessment service for HP's network of wireless professionals to help you determine your exact needs.

What if I already have a wired network?

If you already have a wired network, you do not need to replace it completely with a wireless one. Instead, you may choose to use wireless technology to expand it into conference rooms, ad-hoc work areas and new office floor areas. Learn more about how easy it is to extend your network in the solution guide "Adding wireless to a wired network".

Can I replace my wired network with a wireless one?

Absolutely. You can make the move from wired to wireless gradually, replacing wires with access points and wireless-enabled computers in one section of your office at a time. If you are moving to a new office or reorganising your office layout, consider deploying wireless networking. HP Financial Services makes it easy to wirelessly network your entire office by offering a complete range of leasing and financing products. Learn more about going 100% wireless in the Setting up a wireless network solution guide.

How secure is my data when I’m using a public hotspot?

Public hotspots (free or subscription based) are by no means as secure as your company's internal wireless network. You should be sure you are logged into your company's virtual private network (VPN) before you access or send confidential documents over a public hotspot's network. Usually, your company’s VPN encryption will keep preying eyes from reading any bits of data snagged out of thin air. If your company doesn't have a VPN and you use a web-based e-mail system like Yahoo or Hotmail to access confidential data in a hotspot, you may expose private information because your e-mail won't be encrypted. Consider refraining from checking web-based e-mail from a hotspot or work with your company to create a VPN for secure access.
