You do not need an iPod, iPAQ handheld, or another MP3 player to listen to a podcast. Today, podcasts - audio and video files that play on a variety of electronic devices -- enable delivery of content on demand to busy IT professionals anywhere, even at their desks.
Podcasts provide far more than news reports or entertainment and are a way to address flexible learning requirements. IT staff can download the latest technical information from experts or get tips and advice from their peers. Podcasts can also give staff a glimpse into conferences and other events, such as the HP Technology Forum when they can’t attend in person.
“Employees are working in a very fast-paced environment. They need learning that is immediate, relevant and in the context of their work,” writes Claire Schooley, senior analyst with Forrester Research. [Source: “Knowledge, Learning, and Work Unite, Feb. 2007, Forrester Research, Inc.]
Because most podcasts are generally short, often running 10 minutes or less, and are available for little or no charge, they may be ideal for IT professionals who need precise, focused information. For instance, HP customers can subscribe to service group podcasts to learn about the latest technology from HP product experts or deliver technical content such as issues to consider when migrating to ProLiant servers or how to get the most out of HP BladeSystem solutions.
Using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds, podcasts deliver fresh content to users based on their interests whenever an update is made on one of their favorite sites. RSS uses XML (extensible markup language) to share and distribute content. To access HP feeds, it is necessary to install a feed reader (sometimes called a news reader or aggregator), software that can be installed on a computer or a service that can be accessed through the Web.
Users subscribe to podcasts in a similar way as to an RSS feed. An audio file attaches to RSS “podcatching" software, such as iTunes, iPodder, Odeo, Feedburner, and PodNova. Once users subscribe to a podcast feed, they can then automatically receive updates to a series of podcasts of their favorite podcasts. Podcast feeds, like RSS feeds, are often denoted by an orange XML button.
