1. Avoid the commute: Save energy and frustration.

“I’m sitting in a traffic jam, in the car that I need to get to work, so that I can pay for the house that I’m never in.” Familiar?

As fuel prices skyrocket, growing numbers of commuters are avoiding rush hour and working from home when possible. Simple maths shows that eliminating the drive to work even just once a week makes it possible to cut fuel expenses by 20%, not to mention the reduction of wear and tear on your car - and your nerves. It also lowers your personal “carbon footprint” noticeably, and depending on your line of work, you may well find that you’re more productive without the office banter to distract you.

The technology that you need to stay connected and productive away from the office desk is available. All you need is some creative thinking about where to work, and how to spend all the time that you’ll save.

2. Save power: Good for your wallet, good for the earth.

It’s easy to be wasteful, but saving money and energy is probably not as hard as you think. Consider giving these two steps special attention this year:

Use energy-efficient equipment: Modern computers and monitors with good “Energy Star” ratings can help slash consumption. Engineers have given a great deal of thought to making computers, monitors, and power supplies efficient.

Use energy management: For many, reading product instructions to understand how to use built-in features seems like a useless chore. Nevertheless, preventing waste and minimising the burden that we place on the environment is an important personal responsibility. Employed regularly, power-saving features can also pay off in terms of lower electric bills and longer battery life.

3. Foster relationships by “remembering” important dates.

Do you miss more birthdays than you remember? Most of us spend at least part of each day using smart devices that could easily oil our rusty memories. Have you taken the time to enter the names, birthdates and anniversaries of the people that are important in your life?

If you synchronise this data with mobile devices, you can take immediate action wherever you are by sending a short message or some flowers, or by making a phone call.

Computer-enabled grey matter can also keep track of occasions that usually just go uncelebrated, such as the anniversary of your customer’s first order with your company.

Be sure to make a habit of entering information right away: Did you just find out the name of your customer’s spouse, boss or most important client? Did a neighbour just have a baby? Plug that information into your reminder system before it goes under.

4. Do your backups to help avoid a data-loss catastrophe.

There are two main reasons why regular backups are frequently neglected: First, not everyone experiences a complete meltdown, and most of us naturally assume that it “can’t happen to me.” Second, until catastrophe strikes, backups seem like the perfect thing to do “later” – a procrastinator’s dream.

Make backups a permanent part of your schedule. Don’t think of it as wasted time, think of it as an investment in the future. This not only gives you peace of mind, it can help avoid days, or even years, of hassles, lost memories, angry customers and frustrated colleagues. Make 2008 the year you learn to perform regular back ups, but don’t learn the hard way. Learn by cultivating good habits, not by experiencing a data-loss disaster!
