The arrival of blade systems has revolutionised the data centre. Instead of large numbers of racks holding servers, blade system enclosures use less space but deliver more computing power.

That power, when allied with virtualisation is helping large companies reduce their energy costs while meeting their growing computing needs. With the HP ProLiant BladeSystem c3000, also known as Shorty, HP already has an enclosure designed specifically for the small to mid market.

Now HP has introduced the perfect match for the c3000 – the HP ProLiant BL260c (aka "Shorty's side kick") –  a low cost server blade priced for the cost conscious customer. But don't mistake low cost for lower capability. The only thing lightweight about the HP ProLiant BL260c is the price.

The BL260c comes with either two Intel® dual-core or two Intel quad-core processors. With 6 DDR2 memory slots capable of supporting 4GB 667MHz memory chips, this blade can support up to 24GB of RAM. With two 500GB internal SATA drives, it has the storage to match its computational power.

That’s not all

Two 1Gb Ethernet ports and HP's leading management products – Integrated Lights-Out 2 and HP Insight Control Data Centre edition are part of the BL260c.

If that wasn't enough, securely hidden inside the BL260c is a USB port. Using HP ProLiant iVirtualisation, you can have your BL260c delivered with Citrix XenServer or VMware ESX 3i Hypervisors. When Microsoft® ships its Hyper-V Hypervisor, you will be able to install that on a USB key as well.

Unlike many standalone servers that have huge power requirements, the BL260c requires just 180W. In contrast, most standalone servers capable of running two quad-core Intel Xeon processors need as much as 500W.

Because the BL260c is a server blade, you can slot it into either the HP ProLiant BladeSystem c3000 or c7000 chassis. This gives you dense blade computing with a power requirement that will help shrink your carbon footprint – and reduce your energy outlay.

These power savings can quickly stack up. Power savings alone mean it could pay for itself in less than a year.

What does this mean?

Cost-conscious customers, who may not need all the features a HP ProLiant BL460c can offer now have a blade option – one that offers high power at an affordable price. What’s more, it’s capable of running almost any application you want including Microsoft® Exchange, SharePoint and SQL Server, Oracle's® PeopleSoft CRM application, IBM's DB2 and even SAP.

If you are looking for a blade capable of running your business or handling the needs of a remote office, take a closer look at the BL260c.
