Reliability and performance are essential in the computer systems that businesses rely on. That's why solid state drives, a new storage technology for commercial desktops, are a big deal that you should know about.

Unlike mechanical hard disk drives, solid state drives use solid state memory to store your computer's data. There are no moving parts, so these drives are more robust than their mechanical counterparts. And since data is stored in flash-based memory, a solid state drive doesn’t need mechanical process to find it.

Solid state drives offer:

  • Reliability and durability No moving parts, so much less chance of mechanical failure; environmentally rugged design.

  • Faster performance and increased responsiveness Storage bottleneck associated with data intensive applications are eliminated, random I/O performance is maximised. System boot-up and application start-up times are reduced; better software and operating system performance.

  • Quieter operation Lack of moving parts makes PCs with solid state drives a silent partner in your organisation.

  • Energy efficiency Use less wattage than mechanical counterparts, generate less heat. ENERGY STAR® qualified – considerable energy savings.

Made to last

You probably know what a challenge it is to recover data from a hard disk drive that has suffered a mechanical failure. There’s a good chance you lost some of your data, not to mention productivity. With a conventional hard disk drive function, occasional failures are inevitable.

Solid state drives are more robust and reliable because nothing inside them moves; they can't suffer from mechanical problems, so you don't have to worry about drive failures.

Fast access to your data

Do you have time to get a cup of coffee in the morning because your computer takes so long to boot up? Conventional hard disk drives rely on mechanisms for storing and retrieving that introduce latency and high seek times when loading or saving programs and documents.

Solid state drives store your applications and data in flash-based solid state memory rather than on disks. There's no mechanical process involved in retrieving your applications when you need them; booting up your system and accessing files is near-instantaneous.

Solid state silence is golden

You know that whirr you hear when your computer is retrieving or storing information on your hard disk drive? That noise disappears when you have a system with a solid state drive (because it has no moving parts). Data is stored and retrieved electrically not mechanically, so the only thing you'll hear when your solid state drive is working is golden silence.

Energy efficient

Another big advantage of solid state drives is their energy efficiency. They generate less heat and fewer costs associated with cooling. They're also ENERGY STAR qualified, so you can count on reduced energy consumption over conventional hard-disk drives.

It's a big deal

Look for solid state drives in HP business notebooks, HP thin clients and HP Compaq dc7800 Ultra-slim desktop PCs. They're slightly more expensive than conventional hard disk drives but with benefits like increased reliability, reduced noise, faster response times and energy efficiency, they're worth it.
